Apparently, the canals are not appropriate for recreation due to the canals’ industrial design and other unknown hazards. According to the federal Bureau of Land Management (BLM) agency, the waters may “be unsafe for boating and swimming”. So, it turns out that those gorgeous blue canals in the desert aren’t actually made for swimming and boating, despite how much they look like they would be perfect for a Insta-photo. So while we understand the urge to explore, we also think it’s important to be respectful of locals and their way of life. But the thing is, it’s not natural at all-the canals are designed for industrial purposes by local company Intrepid Potash. Case in point: the Utah blue canals near Bonneville Salt Flats. But there’s such a thing as being too curious for your own good. In fact, we think it’s vital to exploring more authentically. It’s not that we don’t appreciate a good hidden gem.
Why Exploring the Blue Canal Isn’t Recommended The area is a remnant of the ancient Lake Bonneville, and it’s the largest of many salt flats in the region.
